v23.5.3.0
- Fixed an issue sending email with Office 365 SMTP authentication failing, which can be due to an external firewall.
- Added support for incorrect configurations with Office 365 in particular, as well as any email provider, where CryptoPrevent will auto-correct settings on failure and retry sending email several times with different or suggested settings depending on the specific failure.
- Removed “Test Protection” button on Windows 11 22H2 (and future versions) as it is no longer necessary. The button will remain in previous versions of Windows 11, Windows 10, and previous versions of Windows. Here’s why:
- Windows 11 22H2 update removed SRP (Software Restriction Policies) functionality from Windows itself, therefore CryptoPrevent can no longer leverage its configuration. The removed Windows SRP protections were the first/original protection offered by CryptoPrevent, but they are the least effective against newer malware that has emerged and evolved since that time. Over the years they have been overshadowed by the other 3 newer and more comprehensive protection mechanisms offered by CryptoPrevent, which provide coverage for both older and newer malware types just the same. As such, a Windows 11 22H2 PC is no less secure against ransomware/malware than a previous version of Windows 11 or Windows 10, because these older ransomware types (which were largely protected against by the SRP features) are all no longer used or seen in the wild.
- The “test protection” button in CryptoPrevent was only designed to test the Windows SRP (Software Restriction Policies) feature, as this is the only protection (of 4 core protections) which CryptoPrevent offers that it doesn’t explicitly control, therefore it will tell you the test fails/protection not applied when only SRP is not working. This test does NOT reflect the status of other core protections that CryptoPrevent puts in place — if there were any issue with the other core protections not working as configured, you would get specific errors regarding that on startup and WITHOUT having to use the test protection button. Be assured that in the absence of other errors, you are assured that CryptoPrevent’s core protections are in fact enabled and working as expected.
