So I just noticed, after several years, I had an unpublished draft in blogger. So I check it out, and decided to post it below, because it’s still good info for those who don’t know. This must be several years old. I don’t really use that method any longer – I do the vast majority of virus removals while on a live system, not in an offline environment as mentioned below. Anyway, here’s an unmodified...
Sure, everybody’s got them, for one reason or another. Maybe that pesky “do not import duplicates” check box seems to taunt you with failed promises. Who knows. But most people have run into this, right? Sure, there are apps out there, nothing free that I’ve found, but for $20-$50 you can buy a program to rid you of the duplicates, often they are even complicated with lots of duplicate finding criteria you’ll need to muddle...
Wow! Make virtual hard disks of physical ones! Get it HERE. That will greatly simplify the existing process of creating a virtual hard disk and cloning to it, by either mounting it (real pain) or from inside a running virtual machine (still a hassle.) Of course they aren’t likely to release compatibility for a non-MS format, but at least can use MS VHD format in VirtualBox.
Any decent tech knows about Nirsoft utilities, but what a hassle downloading them all. Until recently, I had scripted a weekly FTP download with wget to download newer file versions to a network share on my server, unzip, and package them neatly to automatically sync to my flash drive and tech machines. Also, what a hassle sifting through over 100 utilities when it’s time to use one. Sometimes even remembering the file name of some...
Norton Anti-Virus is always the cause, isn’t it? Got this message trying to browse a computer on my network. I can access the computer via UNC \computername or even IP address, but cannot access a share and permissions are all good. On the target machine I checked NetBIOS setting under WINS tab in network adapter > properties > TCP/IP > advanced. It is set to default, which uses the value assigned by the DHCP server. ...
OK, so you’ve removed malware preventing Windows from starting, check! Or, maybe you just botched an IE8 upgrade. So now you notice IE8 isn’t working… well, maybe you can get to a webpage, but you can’t use the IE toolbar or get to other settings, such as internet properties (i.e. inetcpl.cpl doesn’t launch.) — or maybe it just doesn’t work at all……. Maybe it’s not even IE8 but it’s IE7…… or maybe it’s so foobar...
So, it turns out if you uninstall the express edition and install professional, your professional will still be express…. To avoid the issue, after the uninstall you must manually delete %allusersprofile%Application DataMicrosoftOffice Accountingx.0pa.dat where x is a 3 or 4 depending on your version. Maybe I should have actually trusted an “upgrade” installation although at this point I’m not certain it was ever an option… I also deleted a few other things left behind that...
My apps (www.d7xtech.com) aren’t that good. I won’t deny it, but they fill a void that I need filled, because you generally can’t find that functionality elsewhere (or at least, couldn’t at the time I wrote them.) Enter www.safer-networking.org the people behind Spybot Search & Destroy. This article isn’t about Spybot S&D (I could dwell on that for a while) but rather about some of the website’s other promising offerings: RunAlyzer and RegAlyzer. First I...
Don’t get me wrong, there are quite a few things wrong with the philosophy of what’s going on in this screen shot, but just to focus on the most obvious: don’t you just love how you need instructions for everything, and, ROTF, how they are so complicated they must be printed out? I could not make this stuff up!
https://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/windowshomeserver/soho/default.mspx ‘bout time. Windows Home Server really is about the sweetest thing for a
