First, I hope you know that D7 has ALWAYS done the set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 environment variable bit before launching Computer Management in the Windows tab, so you can simply select Show Hidden Devices in the Device Manager and see actual missing devices and the Non-Plug and Play Devices category. That feature is a given, and has been around since long before D7 went public. The Missing Non-Plug and Play category in Device Manager: However, […]
I’m finally cranking out another app that has been an idea on the back burner for some time now. Disk Health Monitor This is a real-time monitor, folks, with a tiny footprint. The purpose is to alert you (via system tray pop-up and/or EMAIL) when a potential disk error condition is logged in the NT Event Log, indicating a failing hard disk or a partition that needs some chkdsk TLC. How it works: The application […]
In D7 v4.7.9 (currently available only as a pre-release update) I’ve added a sweet new feature! D7 Locksmith – a function to remove passwords from offline Windows installations. What you do: You can either slave the HDD to your Tech Bench Computer, or boot the client’s PC to a WinPE based boot CD with D7 on your flash drive. Run D7 Locksmith from the D7 > Offline tab, and click the Make Modifications button. […]
On November 21st, I will be starting a new career. Currently, I manage a team of techs at a computer store in one city, where I keep an apartment to live at during the week, and I drive 2 hours back home every weekend where I work my side computer business. This couldn’t last forever, so I had to find work in my home town. Problem is, there simply aren’t enough jobs there… So […]
Here’s what’s new in the last few versions of D7 (currently at v4.7.4): General: Del Temp Files function now also does Windows Update temps (%windir%SoftwareDistributionDownload) Repair Permissions time is vastly reduced by combining command line parameters for subinacl (duh!) clicking the X to close D7 will prompt you as to HOW to close D7 (completely, as if using the Close button, or partially as the previous behavior exhibited.) D7 can now prevent system sleep mode […]
dSupport v1.3 Fixed issue with not running CCleaner / Defraggler on 64bit systems. Added update functionality to the installer. From now on, all updates will come via the new update functionality. Basically the attached installer will automatically update the dSupport application right off of my website after installation. So each time you install it, you will get the most updated copy.
D7 v4.6.4 now includes special methods related to deleting the reparse point created by this malware on the Tweaks tab > NTFS Junctions. The new function is “Destroy Junction” which will be able to delete the junction point on top of the directory where the malware hides, allowing you to then delete that directory. Haven’t seen this malware before? I’m talking about what some call “zeroaccess” and it can be easily identified because you will […]
Never forget DNS! Had this issue recently, where QB literally took 10 minutes to load the default company file. When no company file was loaded by default, QB started almost instantly. Network traffic was nil, and I could access the appropriate share without issue. It took me a minute to add two and two. Note by “server” I mean any machine hosting your Quickbooks company file, and by “workstation” I mean any PC with […]
Exactly as it sounds. Outlook freezes for a bit, after 5-10 minutes finally displays “disconnected” from Exchange server. Cannot connect, and any attempt to do so will freeze it up again until it finally fails. No error messages. The Fix: correct the system time! Turns out this client’s system time was set to a MERE 40 minutes into the future. Imagine that – it causes Outlook to freeze up when trying to connect to Exchange. […]
