Please accept my apologies, but to fess up, I did it… Recently I continued a project started earlier before summer, to move our download server to a more capable host, while splitting it into separate servers for different applications/updates so one failure wouldn’t affect all of our apps download/update capabilities, and also to pave the way for some new redundancy. Well between yesterday and today, we’ve had the usual download and update issues due to slow DNS propagation to […]
How can I consolidate my data for imaging?? Backing up to image files is largely preferred by some users because it’s a lot easier to mount files like virtual hard drives for simple searching and recovery. You would need to consolidate all your data to be backed up to one partition to make that feasible. You could have the files such as My Documents, My Photos, My Music, My Videos and so on redirected to […]
How to I get the data off my devices?? There is backup and storage space available online for free (5GB for iOS/iCloud, 15GB for Android/Google Drive, 7GB for Windows Phone/SkyDrive), but getting all your data from all your devices could be tricky. You can get local copies of all your files on your computer to Google Drive or SkyDrive, if you have installed their applications. You would just have to add the files to the […]
How do I back it up?? First, you would make sure that your disaster-recovery and backup software is selected. Both, Windows 7 and 8, applications that are integrated to can complete system-recovery images. Although, in Windows 8 it’s hidden under Control Panel > All Items > Windows 7 File Recovery. The routine to restore is not always successful, it can fail with a change just as simple as replacing your hard drive with a smaller […]
Where do I need to back it up to? I’m just going to guess that you don’t have a tape backup drive, you may not even have an optical drive. But, if you do, there is nothing wrong with keeping a backup, or more, on a disc. I don’t think I would do things that way, older technology slows the process down a lot. Some broadband connection has enough upstream bandwidth to backup data through […]
What do I need to back up? You will need to know what you would want/need backed up before you can know how you should best be backing up. You have the choice, there is no right or wrong choice here, but I would recommend protecting anything you may want or things you can’t re-create like; tax and business stuff, anything that you have scanned and destroyed the hard copies), things that your kids drew […]
What is the ultimate rule??? There is three basis rules making sure you have everything backed up. To lower the risk of loss data, you should have three copies of the files and things you don’t want to loss: the original copy (that flies that you have on your computer already), a backup of that original, and a backup of the backup (so that you will have two). It’s ideal to not that the both […]

Recent Lenovo BIOS rootkit bad enough, also exposes huge security hole to 3rd parties!
Lenovo rootkit binaries persisting via BIOS/Windows Platform Binary Table (WPBT) will make your systems vulnerable to any 3rd parties capable of intercepting your web traffic! Affected models with “patch” linked below – but I would investigate before using. I’ll be looking more into this soon. https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/product_security/lse_bios_notebook https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/product_security/lse_bios_desktop More Info: WPBT info (Microsoft, PDF download) Other Sources: http://firmwaresecurity.com/2015/08/11/lenovo-lse-wpbt-and-wpbbin-exe/
How to stay safe? You would restrict write permissions on the file servers as much as possible. Make sure to educate the users to contact IT if they encounter any suspicious pop-ups. Use advanced endpoint protection that can identify any and all new malware variants and detect any malicious traffic. Make time for regular offline backups; test backups to ensure that they can be restored from reliably. Use web and email protection to block access […]
