PSR.EXE aka “Problem Steps Recorder” is a sweet Win7 addition for those of us who don’t know exactly what our client (or our mother) is doing to produce that whacky problem. Enter PSR.
Click Start > Run (or ahem, the search box will do) and “PSR” no quotes, of course. Hit the Start recording button, reproduce steps, user can optionally make comments embedded in the MHT at any point, then stop recording and the user is asked to name a ZIP which is placed on the desktop.
Inside the ZIP is an MHT (single file HTML package) containing slides of screen shots, detailed step-by-step info on what the user did and where, and any comments the user made. Check my report file below for an example.
Incidentally, I recorded this with the fix to a real issue: Windows 7 didn’t like having my OneNote icon in the systray, even after I enabled the icon (disabled by default except for notifications.) The fix was to disable the icon and re-enable from within OneNote… the re-enable steps are what you see in my test report. Also note I dinna want you seeing some names of my notebooks if you were wondering.
Click to open the MHT here: Test Problem Report (note the images in the .mht were compressed by my previous blog, but PSR actually creates them at a much higher quality.)
